Services

Let's use Maslow's hierarchy of needs to organize our thoughts about the services that will be needed in a Katrina Village.

    • Self-actualization - this very high level includes peacefulness and a sense that both you and the universe are exactly where they should be.
    • Esteem - next down from the top is a sense that you are worthy and doing well. Job banks, educational opportunities and self government are key ingredients to increase esteem.
    • Love - Children and adults need to give and receive love. But the two lower needs must be taken care of in order to be free to love.
    • Safety - Safe from the flood, from looting and crime, from chaos, providing this sense of security is a primary reason for creating Katrina Villages. Even though they are temporary, they will be safe.
    • Physiological - Food, water, shelter, clothing, basic medical care are foundational needs without which humans often cannot survive. Almost all Katrina Villagers will need these necessities provided by the rest of us during their first weeks or months. The most successful villages will be able to supply themselves and pay rent to those who lent their land and temporary housing.
It will take the collaborative effort of many non=profit organizations, public service organizations, foundations and generous individuals to make the Katrina Village concept a reality -- WE HAVE TO START NOW.
