Katrina Village Food Supplies
Feeding 80 people for 3 to 6 months is a big job but not so daunting as feeding 80,000. Host communities will need to coordinate among food banks, churches and other relief organizations to get a balanced diet to each village at first.
Within 3 months a significant proportions of villagers will have been able to
- relocate to more permanent homes,
- qualify for food stamps and other forms of aid so they can purchase their own food,
- obtain paying jobs
In some areas Villages will plant gardens that can supply some fresh produce within 3 months.
It is likely that there will be a small Village population who do not develop self-reliance. But this is a fact of life in most communities. As long as the initial population of the Katrina Village is kept small the host community will not be stuck with a large, long-term burden.
